Paper Marbling with Baykul.
On Christmas day…
My brother and I were in our hotel room in Paris, trying to figure out how and where we can find a place to hang out without running into the many typical tourist traps of Paris. Having walked all over the city the few days leading up to Christmas, the thought of walking around in the cold to explore Paris on foot was not something we were all too excited for.
Luckily, we found Baykul on Airbnb (here is the LINK) and decided to spend our afternoon learning the craft of paper marbling from the great Turkish master, Baykul.
Baykul and his cats were was kind enough to invite us into his cozy studio to show us how colors can take forms and be manipulated to create incredible pieces of art.
Truly a mind-blowning experience.

Unearthed Fish Relief @ the studio

During my trip to Florence, a few years back, I had purchased a few notebooks from a traditional book binder by the name of Il Papiro. Book was bound with patterns unlike anything I have ever seen.
Curiosity on these insanely detailed patterns were achieved and transferred to paper was finally revealed!
Oil based pigments float on top of a solution of
water + alginate. The viscosity of the water below allows for the pigmentation on top to be manipulated with a needle tool to create the patterns you see in this image.
All our prints sitting on the drying rack ready to take home!
